History of the METZ FAMILY!

In 1870 Nicholas Metz immigrated to Lyons from Heppenheim, Germany In keeping. with family tradition, he earned his living as a stone mason. That was Lyons’ gain because Nicholas Metz built many local buildings, including the Lyons Village Hall and the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Conley School in Riverside. Nicholas had a son, Joseph, who followed in his father’s footsteps. And in 1895 he started his own mason business. Eventually he expanded by not only by not only putting buildings, but also by concentrated supplying other masons with materials.

The METZ FAMILY Legacy

Metz and Son dates back many years.

In 1898 Joseph, for the first time, made his own concrete block for a house he was constructing on Gage in Lyons. (This house still stands.) Joseph’s son, Henry, joined the family business and in 1912, property at 8136 W. Ogden was purchased. Eventually Henry presided over the business and concentrated on manufacturing concrete block and supplying materials to the local mason trade. Today, though automated and greatly expanded, the business continues to be run by Henry’s son Edward Sr. and his children who are the fifth Metz generation involved In this long-time Lyons business.

THE METZ FAMILY (from left) Margaret, Christian, Johanna, Ed Sr., Mark and Ed. Jr. are proud of Metz & Son, a long-time Lyons masonry and concrete supply company.
